Clinical Clerkship Program – Hematology

Overview

Imam Al-Hasan Al-Mujtaba Hematology Center is a specialized tertiary teaching center dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of hematological disorders. The center provides students with supervised clinical exposure through inpatient wards, outpatient hematology clinics, diagnostic laboratories, blood transfusion services, and multidisciplinary patient care. Clinical training emphasizes evidence-based medicine, patient-centered care, professionalism, and clinical reasoning.

Hematology

Training Scope

Students will gain supervised clinical experience in:

* Comprehensive hematological history taking

* Systematic physical examination

* Daily inpatient ward rounds

* Outpatient hematology clinics

* Clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis

* Interpretation of complete blood count (CBC)

* Peripheral blood film interpretation

* Interpretation of coagulation studies

* Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy indications

* Blood transfusion principles

* Clinical case presentation

* Documentation and patient follow-up

Core Clinical Exposure

Students will encounter patients with:

* Iron deficiency anemia

* Megaloblastic anemia

* Hemolytic anemia

* Aplastic anemia

* Thalassemia

* Sickle cell disease

* Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)

* Hemophilia and inherited bleeding disorders

* Leukemia

* Lymphoma

* Multiple myeloma

* Neutropenia

* Pancytopenia

* Coagulation disorders

* Thrombotic disorders

Learning Objectives

By the end of the rotation, students should be able to:

* Obtain a focused hematological history.

* Understand the indications for blood transfusion and bone marrow examination.

* Professional attire and official university identification badges must be worn at all times.

* Patient confidentiality and ethical standards must be strictly maintained.

* Students should review assigned cases before each clinical session and engage in self-directed learning following patient encounters.

* Clinical procedures, including bone marrow aspiration and blood transfusion-related activities, are observational or performed only under the direct supervision of the responsible consultant or resident physician.

* Strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures is essential, particularly when caring for immunocompromised patients.
