Clinical Training – Surgical Line

Overview

Al-Warith International Foundation for Oncology is a highly specialized tertiary cancer center that provides comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care. Students are exposed to the principles of modern surgical oncology, multidisciplinary decision-making, patient-centered care, and advanced perioperative management within a specialized oncology environment. The hospital includes dedicated oncology surgery services, outpatient multidisciplinary clinics, and specialized operating theatres.

Training Scope

During the rotation, students will gain supervised exposure to:

Surgical Oncology

* Principles of oncologic surgery

* Cancer staging and surgical planning

* Curative vs palliative surgery

* Surgical margins and lymph node assessment

* Multidisciplinary treatment planning

General Surgical Oncology

* Gastrointestinal malignancies

* Hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors

* Soft tissue tumors

* Breast surgery observation

* Colorectal cancer surgery

Subspecialty Exposure

Students may observe services related to:

* Urologic Oncology

* Gynecologic Oncology

* Thoracic Oncology Surgery

* ENT Oncology Surgery

* Bone and Musculoskeletal Oncology Surgery

* Vascular and Thoracic procedures when available

These specialties form part of the surgical department of the institution.

Outpatient Clinical Experience

Students will participate in supervised clinics to learn:

* Initial assessment of oncology patients

* History taking

* Physical examination

* Interpretation of imaging

* Cancer staging

* Treatment planning

* Follow-up evaluation

* Patient counseling

Exposure may include:

* Surgical Oncology Clinic

* Breast Clinic

* Urologic Oncology Clinic

* Gynecologic Oncology Clinic

* Liver & Pancreatic Surgery Clinic

* Thoracic Oncology Clinic

Operating Theatre Learning

Students are expected to:

* Observe major oncologic procedures

* Understand operative planning

* Learn operating room protocols

* Maintain aseptic technique

* Observe patient positioning

* Understand surgical instrumentation

* Observe specimen handling for pathology

* Participate in postoperative discussions

Students should develop competence in:

* Daily ward rounds

* Recognition of surgical complications

Students should appreciate the role of multidisciplinary cancer management involving:

The institution conducts regular multidisciplinary meetings for complex cancer cases, allowing students to understand collaborative decision-making.
