Program Mission & Objectives

The Undergraduate Medical Program (MBBS) at Al-Subtain University College of Medicine is carefully designed to prepare qualified, competent, and ethical physicians capable of serving local and international healthcare needs. The college implements a modern, well-designed, student-centered curriculum that integrates basic medical sciences, clinical training, research, and professional development.

Program Duration & Phases

The total duration of the program is 5.5 Academic Years, divided into three distinct phases:

  1. Basic Science Phase (2.5 Years): Focusing on foundational biomedical sciences.
  2. Pathophysiology Phase (1 Year): Bridging the gap between normal physiology and clinical diseases.
  3. Clinical Clerkship Phase (2 Years): Intensive, hands-on clinical rotations inside hospitals.
  • Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

Curriculum Structure

1- Phase 1: Basic Medical Sciences (2.5 Years)

Focuses on the normal structure, function, and development of the human body, as well as foundational health concepts. The curriculum is structured in an integrated and spiral format, allowing students to revisit medical concepts with increasing complexity throughout the program.

2- Phase 2: Pathophysiology (1 Year)

A critical bridging phase that connects normal physiology with clinical manifestations, ensuring students understand the "why" behind clinical symptoms before entering hospital wards.

System-Based Pathophysiology Modules: Students study the altered physiological processes across specific medical specialties, including:

  1. Pathophysiology of Cardiology
  2. Pathophysiology of Respiratory
  3. Pathophysiology of Gastroenterology & Nutrition
  4. Pathophysiology of Endocrinology & Metabolism
  5. Pathophysiology of Nephrology & Urology
  6. Pathophysiology of Hematology & Oncology
  7. Pathophysiology of Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal
  8. Advanced Pathology 1 & 2
  9. Pharmacology 1 & 2

3- Phase 3: Clinical Clerkship (2 Years)

During this phase, students complete intensive, hands-on clinical rotations inside hospitals. The time distribution for each specialty is as follows:

  • Internal Medicine: 4 months
  • Pediatrics: 3 months
  • General Surgery: 2 months
  • Gynecology & Obstetrics: 2 months
  • Orthopedics: 1 month
  • Urology: 1 month
  • ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat): 1 month
  • Dermatology: 1 month
  • Family Medicine: 1 month
  • Neurology: 1 month
  • Psychiatry: 1 month
  • Infectious Diseases: 1 month
  • Ophthalmology: 2 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 2 weeks
  • Radiology: 2 weeks
  • Anesthesiology: 2 weeks
  • Medical Ethics: 2 weeks
  • Traditional Medicine: 1 week
  • Epidemiology: 1 week

Evaluation & Examination Methods in the Clerkship Phase

Students must successfully complete two distinct educational course components:

First: Theory Courses

This academic component provides foundational medical knowledge before or alongside clinical training.

  • Evaluation Method: Assessed at the end of each system/module through a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) examination.

Second: Clinical / Practical Clerkship Courses

This represents hands-on hospital training where students interact with patients, perform procedures, and develop clinical skills. Evaluation is divided into two primary types:

1. Global Rating Form (GRF) & Formative Assessment

  • GRF (Global Rating Form): A holistic evaluation based on the professors’ overall impression of the student throughout the rotation. It reflects:
  • Professionalism and attitude.
  • Participation and engagement.
  • Clinical skills and diagnostic competence.
  • Communication with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Theoretical knowledge level.
  • Time spent with the supervising faculty.
  • Formative Assessment (Rotation-Based): A continuous evaluation documented in the student's Logbook, focusing on progress during the rotation. It includes daily performance evaluations, direct observation of clinical tasks, and the following core components:
  • DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)
  • Case Presentation (Structured presentation of patient cases)
  • Mini-CEX (Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise with immediate feedback to track clinical development)

2. OSCE Examination

  • OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination): The final practical examination administered at the end of each rotation. Students are assessed through structured clinical stations that evaluate practical skills, effective communication, clinical reasoning, and the ability to execute medical procedures successfully.
